The show, To Market To Market, features the individual marketing strategies of artists. Video artist, Michael Smith, invites us to present his persona, Mike, and sell his videos. In mutual collaboration and with an indirect marketing approach, Mike is becomes the official sponsor of the VIDEOCLUB.
For the 5-week exhibition, VIDEOCLUB screens blockbuster movies in a low-lit room within the gallery. Movies play twice daily, each opening with a short commercial of Mike inviting visitors to: “Sit back, relax and enjoy the movie!” Movies include such hits as Beat Street, Terminator 2, The Wizard of Oz, Casino and many more. The movie listings are posted around downtown Brooklyn, a VIDEOCLUB HOTLINE is set up, and a broad, atypical gallery audience attends the movies regularly.
After the events of September 11, 2001, all movies are played in silence.
